How to Make a Lapbook

Lapbooks are very easy to make!  Basically you take a file folder and fold the sides into the middle, so it opens from the middle like a pair of shutters.  Then you fill it with small booklets (mini books) of information about the topic that you are doing the lapbook on. Then decorate the lapbook how you want.  This gives your children/ students a treasure that they can refresh their memory of what they learned for years to come.

Dinah Zike

Dinah Zike is the author of several books that show the reader how to make mini books.  These mini books are perfect for lapbooks.  In the books that she has for different subjects like math, science, history, ect., and she also includes different things you can include in your mini books.  I love these books to make lapbooks.  They are full of ideas.

Lapbook Resources

You can use a lot of different things in your lapbook.  Some examples of things you can use are: mini books, printables, puzzles, games, maps, and timelines.  There are lots of resources available on the internet that you can print out.  You can also make your own foldables based on the Dinah Zike books above.  Other things you can add to your lapbooks are stickers, and die cuts, patterned scrapbooking paper.  Here are some great lapbooking resource pages for you:

One of best things about lap books is that many kids enjoy making them. They can be as creative as the maker wants. I've found that making lap books is an easy way for young kids (K-3) to present what they know without an excessive amount of writing. The resources listed on the right have printables that make lap book making easier. Great Hub!
